Go light for fast fishing
A light tackle set and a few lures are all you need for rockfishing. Rockfishing is a fishing technique that's quick and easy to set up, offering many advantages in wintertime. A simple rod and reel set and a small backpack with a few lures stored in the boot of the car will enable you to take advantage of every opportunity quickly. A clear day, half an hour to spare, and you're ready to catch a few fish. In no time at all, you'll be touching fish and having fun with fine line.
Always an accessible spot, even in winter
Whatever the weather conditions, with the rockfishing technique there's always a place to fish. A simple side of a dyke sheltered from the wind, or a sheltered rocky area, or even a corner of a harbour, will give you the opportunity to cast or simply animate a few lures on the bottom and catch fish. It's also a great opportunity to prospect new spots that you don't get the chance to explore in summer. In winter, of course, beaches are more accessible and become great places to fish.
Varying holds and colors
Whether you're fishing in your feet inside a seawall or casting further out from a beach, many species of fish can be caught rockfishing at this time of year.
Barracudas, oblades, sars, serevereaux or horse mackerel can be sought near harbours or from the shore using small swimming fish or micro-jigs. Blennies, gobies and scorpion fish are best fished in shallow water, at your feet, using small soft lures mounted on lead heads. With your rockfishing set, you can also search for cephalopods, cuttlefish, squid and octopus, simply by taking a few small jigs from your lure box.
After a good blast of mistral, when the water is clear in the Mediterranean, it's even possible to sight-fish along dykes and harbors. It's an opportunity to warm up with a bit of walking, and to come across many fish in search of food.
And if you're still afraid of the cold, take your gloves and hat with you so you can still enjoy winter and go fishing.
