Black bass fishing with baitfiness, a modern and profitable technique

Baitfiness consists in using an ultra-light baitcasting set, rod and spinning reel. This is a recent technique that originated in Japan and has been developed over the last 10 years to catch late-season black bass that are often difficult to lure.

What exactly is baitfiness?

Baitfiness is not a technique, but rather a fishing method. Its primary purpose is to lure difficult black bass with light tackle, but some anglers have also adapted it for perch.

The term "baitfiness" refers to the lightness of the lure. The aim is quite obvious: to lure difficult and busy predators.

Smaller lures are presented on lighter rigs, exploiting the advantages offered by a casting package. To fool difficult, educated fish, reduce the size of the lure, refine and lighten the rig and present a lure as naturally as possible to encourage predators to attack.

Top-quality equipment

The special feature of this method is light fishing using a casting set rather than a more traditional spinning set. The equipment is very specific.

The casting rod should be very light and have a maximum power of 7 grams. Its action will be progressive and its sensitivity surgical. Its grip is more comfortable than that of a conventional spinning rod.

You'll also need a reel specifically designed for the job. These reels are highly sophisticated and often expensive. It is possible to customize them, especially the spool, to gain weight and therefore casting distance.

Traditionally, fishing with a casting rod is associated with relatively heavy fishing. The mass of the lure causes the spool to rotate and the line to unwind during casting. The heavier the lure, the greater the inertia, which helps the line to unwind smoothly.

In the case of baitfiness, the lure needs to be light and the inertia low. You need a spool, bearings and a casting brake perfectly adapted to the use of light lures.

The reel can be fitted with 6 or 8 lb braid or fluorocarbon up to 24/100 diameter.

Fluorocarbon is easier to handle, as it tangles less than braid and is therefore easier to untangle. On the other hand, it offers less sensitivity. Be careful not to exceed these resistances at the risk of ovalizing the spool lightened and refined to the extreme on a big fish.

Our fishing technique requires a little practice and experience. It has a few drawbacks that should not be overlooked. But it also offers many advantages.

Fishing has its advantages and disadvantages

The use of such a set increases sensitivity, which is why it is used on difficult fish. Animations must be surgical and the detection of the slightest touch optimal.

The casts are very precise and the lure is delicately placed so as not to arouse the suspicion of educated fish. With a single pull of the trigger, you can control the lure's descent at all times. Reactivity is enhanced and prospecting is faster and more methodical.

Casts can be made faster and with greater precision. In addition, the winch effect and the feeling of power of the spinning reel are restored, with more torque for strong striking and authoritative extraction of predators from their spots. A real plus when you consider that, after all, you're after beautiful fish with small lures.

Finally, compared with a spinning unit of equivalent power, the combo casting will be lighter.

In fact, the equipment sometimes weighs less than 230 g. A real feather in the cap for maximum comfort and sensations.

The techniques used are light fishing, initially designed for black bass: micro jig, light texas, wacky...

The baitfiness allows you to fish on the bottom and thanks to the sensitivity, you can make the lure move very precisely by keeping constant contact with it and making it move naturally close to the bottom. Casting is precise. You can methodically comb a specific area or a marked spot.

The lure lands delicately in the water without arousing the suspicions of reluctant predators.

Light fishing with crankbaits or swimming fish is also ideal when you need to beat the ground. The baitfiness of this reel makes it possible to make a series of casts at an interesting rate. In addition, the torque offered by the small casting reel is relevant for effortlessly retrieving small lures that exert a strong pull on the line. Last but not least, the baitfiness allows you to make strong strikes, as the whole hand wraps around the reel. Even with a baitfiness reel, the feeling of power emanating from the reel is real and perceptible.
