Which casting basket to use for shore fly fishing?

The casting basket allows you to store your fly line when fly-fishing, especially from the shore, to prevent it from getting caught in obstacles on the ground (branches, rocks, etc.) or stepped on. As a result, the fly line can be easily released during false casts and, above all, during the final shoot.

An essential accessory for shore fly fishing

Whether for freshwater fishing (trout in reservoirs), predator fishing (pike, pike-perch, perch) or sea fishing (sea bass and mullet), the casting basket is an indispensable tool for casting long distances without the line being hindered or blocked. Different models are available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Baskets with a rim have certain advantages, but are best suited to short animations

1-Baskets with rim

These baskets keep the silk in a tray, often fitted with spikes, where it settles as it is retrieved. This prevents the silk from falling to the ground.

This type of basket is very practical, especially for fishing where the line will be retrieved by small pulls or strips. This is the case for lake trout or perch fishing.

They are available in rigid (Linekurv), flexible (Take) or wire-mesh (JMC, Scierra) versions.

As soon as you need to recover very quickly and, above all, perform long strips, they are much less suitable.

2-Baskets without rim

This type of basket has a large number of spikes that will hold the silk and prevent it from falling directly to the ground, but it will hang over the sides of the basket. There is no rim around the basket.

The big advantage of this type of basket is that it's possible to make long strips without the hassle of having to house the line in a tray, as is the case with baskets with a rim. The absence of a rim also means that you don't have to bang your hand into it when you're double-pulling (casting from a distance). Another advantage is that you can get into the water without the basket getting in the way.

This is the basket model to use for bass or pike fishing when making this kind of retrieve.

3-Mixed baskets

This is a compromise between the two previous models. They offer the advantage of having a rim only on the sides and being open at the front. They are also fitted with spikes to hold the silk in place.

Remarks :

All these baskets can be found in various fishing stores, and there's a wide choice for a budget ranging from around 40 to 90 euros.

If you're on a budget and want to do-it-yourself, you can make your own throwing basket. Explanatory videos are available on the Internet.
