Senko by Gary Yamamoto, an iconic worm for black bass fishing

Senko by Gary Yamamoto

Created in the 90s by Gary Yamamoto himself, the Senko is a worm designed for black-bass fishing. It has proved its worth over the years, particularly in the USA and Europe.

Senko presentation

At first glance, the Senko is a "classic" worm, with no particular assets. However, it's in action that its potential reveals itself. The Senko is very dense, which allows us to cast it a long way even on weightless rigs. In wacky action, when jigged in the middle, this worm will start to ripple from both ends on the way down. This undulation is undoubtedly the element that triggers an attack on an initially hesitant black bass.

How to fish for black bass with Senko?

Although the Senko excels wacky, it can also be used in a totally different way. Whether weightless Texan, darter or drop-shot, the Senko will always be at ease. The wacky rig is mainly used for sight-fishing black-bass and for getting fish out of obstacles. With a weightless Texan, you have two options: fishing in the middle of an obstacle or fast fishing over a weed bed. Mounted on a simple Texan hook, you can twitch your senko to make it react like a jerkbait thanks to its symmetrical shape, just as a stickbait would on the surface. As for the drop-shot, whether you use a classic single hook or a Texan hook, you'll be able to insist on well-marked areas such as a point, a submerged tree or a break.

Adapt your technique to the season

Although there are many ways to use the senko, it's important to adapt the technique you choose to the weather conditions and the season. For example, the drop-shot is one of the preferred techniques for fishing black-bass in winter. At this time of year, fish are generally posted at depths ranging from 3 to 10 metres and their metabolism is slowing down. The weightless wacky is more a summer technique, although it can be lead-sealed for autumn fishing in 1 to 3 metres of water. The Texan rig is particularly effective in early spring, in the season known as prespawn, when fish move closer to the shore and seek spawning partners in less than 50 cm of water. These very shallow areas are often cluttered with branches, dead grass or rocks, and the Texan is particularly effective.
