How to start fly fishing for predators: advice on the choice of equipment

Many enthusiasts like to tease predators by fishing with lures or livebaits. However, there is a technique that is becoming more and more popular for these species: fly fishing.

With the right equipment and specific streamers, you can enjoy fishing for pike, perch and other black bass in a different way! Here are some elements that can help you to take the step, if it is not already done.

Adapt your approach to the fishing technique

Before jumping into the water with his streams and his whip, a little reflection can't hurt. The choice of the spots, as in any fishing, is very important: the ability to analyze and observe the angler will be required to propose the lures close to certain obstacles or weed beds, along the bank, or at a certain swimming depth (which will guide the choice of the material, in particular the line).

The fishing season, the conditions of the moment will also influence our approach, in particular on the animation of the streamers which will be able to evolve from one session to another, while always betting on the aggressiveness of the carnivorous.

Choosing the right equipment

The range of rods proposed by the manufacturers is nowadays very complete, a vast choice is offered to the fishermen. So much so that it is sometimes difficult to find one's way! It is the length and power of the rod that will generally guide the purchase of a whip: the type of fish species targeted, the volume and weight of the streamers that will be propelled enter into this reflection.

For fishing for perch or blacks with small land flies or lightly weighted flies, a classic 9-foot whip with 5-gauge line can do the trick. But most of the time, heavy lures need to be propelled by more powerful rods.

For a first time buyer, a 9 foot length for an 8 line can provide good versatility for the angler and will allow him to cast many streamer patterns. Windy conditions will not be a problem either.

Some brands are recognized on the market as safe values: for example the Vision rods (Big Daddy range), JMC also offers several models adapted for fishing for carnivorous fish (including the Furious), sets ready to fish are also very good to start, within the reach of all pockets. For fishermen who can afford it, it is not forbidden to enjoy more technical rods: Hardy Zephrus Sintrix, Sage Payload, Thomas & Thomas Exocettâeuros¦

When fishing for (very) big fish, for example nice catfish (or for exotic fishing), you should not hesitate to use more robust models or to handle bigger streams. In this case, a 10 mm line can be recommended.

When it comes to lures, the ideal is to be equipped with several models, to be able to adapt its fishing to the conditions: floating, intermediate and diving lures. This may require the purchase of the corresponding number of reels. Other solutions exist, such as cassette reels, or floating silks with plunging tips, polyleaders... The large arbor reel will also be equipped with a few dozen meters of backing, a wise precaution that could prove decisive when a nice subject has decided to attack our fly.

For a classic leader, it is not necessarily necessary to invent complex solutions. Depending on the fish you are targeting, you can start with 1.50 or 2 meters of fluoro with a diameter of 40 or 50 hundredths. If many pikes with sharp teeth populate the waters, do not hesitate to add a flexible steel leader.

Garnish your box with a few streamers

It is not difficult to find a wide range of streamers adapted for predatory fishing. It is not necessary to have a huge number of flies at the beginning, even if fishermen are sometimes collectors!

A few streamers of different sizes and colors, some weighted and worked with different materials, allow you to start quietly and find your first catches. It is also useful to have in your box a few models evolving on the surface, to take out for example during the summer.

For those who prefer homemade flies, it is also possible to go behind the vise and occupy a few winter evenings (or confinementâeuros¦) in fly tying.

A few basic materials (bucktail, synthetic fibers that give volume and stir up water) allow you to get started and quickly create effective streamers that will arouse the curiosity of the fish.
