Yann Nabusset recently created the "Tous des Tom Sawyer" channel, which offers podcasts featuring interviews with various players in the French fishing industry, with the aim of bringing the world of fishing to a wider audience. In this program, he interviews Jean-Baptiste Vidal, a professional fishing instructor-guide.

Since the beginning of June, this channel has been offering weekly podcasts on the lives of fishermen, fishing guides, fishing brand representatives, influencers, as well as fishermen working in fishing authorities and many others.

At first, Yann's questions are identical, notably about the interviewee's background, their beginnings in fishing, their best memories, then targeted according to their activity in the fishing world.

These interviews, conducted by Yann, allow us to step into the world of fishing and understand how it works, while discovering what drives each angler in this shared passion.

In this program, Jean-Baptiste Vidal tells us about his career, how his passion for fly fishing came about, and his best and worst memories, while explaining how he sees fly fishing thanks to his many experiences as a fishing instructor-guide in France and in many international destinations.

An atypical career

For Jean-Baptiste, like most of the people interviewed in these podcasts, his passion began at an early age. Then it was the 1992 film "Et au milieu coule une rivière", directed by Robert Redford and starring Brad Pitt, which was a real revelation and introduced him to fly fishing at a time when the Internet didn't yet exist.

Since 1993, this passion has changed his life. He chose to study environmental studies, and went on to work for the Fédération de Pêche et de Protection du Milieu Aquatique de Quimper for 5 years, before training to become a fishing guide and working abroad as a guide for renowned international organizations. He also developed his passion for travel to become more professional and fulfill his dreams, and had the opportunity to tie his flies in over 20 countries.

His fondest memories and stories of fishing all over the world

Like all fishermen, Jean-Baptiste will experience incredible emotions through fishing. It's a hobby that allows us to get together at the water's edge and experience exciting, intense moments, alone or with friends.

He will recount his fondest memories, such as catching a trophy permit in Cuba and catching and then losing a giant tarpon in the Los Roques Archipelago, as well as other fishing tales.

The art of fly tying and observation

Throughout the show, he will draw parallels between fly fishing and lure fishing, which have similarities but also differences.

Observation is a skill that every angler must develop to learn about the habits and customs of fish, their environment and the techniques needed to catch them.

In fly fishing, making flies requires even more observation to imitate the prey eaten by fish. A very interesting and exciting dimension that allows fly fishermen to catch their fish with their creations. An art in its own right!

The Fishing Instructor-Guide profession

Jean-Baptiste will share with us his vision of the fishing instructor-guide profession for those who wish to make it their main activity, while telling us throughout this podcast how he practises his profession, and his way of experiencing fishing through his trainees. This sharing and transmission of know-how between enthusiasts is the very essence of this profession-passion that drives many of the contributors to this channel.

His fishing techniques for finding sea bass

You'll also find out in greater detail what attracts Jean-Baptiste to sea bass stalking, particularly on sight in estuaries, although he also fishes from boats on the coast, using his Carolina Skiff specially equipped for fly fishing. This intense type of fishing, which catches very large bass, has become one of his specialties, which he shares with people from all over France and Europe. He will explain some of the subtleties and the approach to this technique, which is still underdeveloped in sea bass fishing.

The realities of climate change and the depletion of Atlantic salmon

At the end of the program, Jean-Baptiste explains the disappearance of the Atlantic salmon, which, like many migratory species, will soon be affected by climate change and, of course, the over-fishing of all our fish species at sea.

These climatic changes are already making themselves felt, altering our aquatic environments. Some fish are already beginning to adapt, while others are experiencing difficult times or even disappearing. Adaptation will be essential, both for the fish and for the anglers, if we are to continue to enjoy this respectful and fascinating pastime.
