The best fishing grounds for tassergal are to be found mainly in and around the Mediterranean, with a high concentration in the south of France. Let's find out more about the best spots for tassergal fishing.

Preferred areas

The Rhone Delta: a major spot for tassergal fishing, particularly from June to November. The delta's rich biotope attracts many predators, including the tassergal, which hunts mullet and redfish.

Estuaries, river mouths, harbours and rocky beaches: areas rich in forage fish (mullets, garfish, small sparids) naturally attract the tassergal. In France, the river mouths from the Var to the Hérault are heavily frequented by this species in summer and autumn. Wave-beaten beaches and rocky outcrops are also ideal locations.

The Mediterranean in general is home to many tassergals, particularly in Corsica, Bouches-du-Rhône, Var and Alpes-Maritimes, where the tassergal has become a common fish, especially during the hottest periods between June and September.

In the Mediterranean, it can also be found in Spain (Ebro delta, Turia river mouth) and along the Italian coast.

Tassergal is also found in some large temperate oceans, such as the eastern coasts of the USA, the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores, but is absent from the North Pacific.

The right spots

To identify suitable spots for tassergal in the Mediterranean, look for characteristic areas where this predator likes to hunt:

Harbour outlets, estuaries, river mouths : these are places where numerous forage fish (mullets, severeaux, orphies) congregate, naturally attracting the tassergal. The Rhône delta is particularly famous, as are the river mouths in the Var and Alpes-Maritimes regions.

Rocky points and wave-beaten beaches: these areas offer favorable underwater relief that attracts the tassergal in search of prey, particularly at the start of the rising tide.

Fish spotting

Visible surface activity : the tassergal is often spotted by fish hunting and the activity of diving birds. The presence of schools of sardines, anchovies or mullets on the surface is an excellent indicator.

Using the sounder : when hunting is not visible, a depth sounder helps locate schools of small fish close to the bottom, a sign that the tassergal is hunting nearby.

The ideal time for tassergal fishing

The tassergal is active at dawn, dusk and even at night, thanks to its large eyes. Fishing at the start of a rising tide is also often very productive.

Favoring areas rich in forage fish, especially estuaries, mouths, harbors and rocky beaches, and observing surface activity or using a depth sounder are the keys to finding the best spots for tassergal in the Mediterranean.

Tassergal is best fished in warm, temperate coastal waters, particularly estuaries rich in forage fish, river mouths and rocky beaches, with a strong concentration in the southern French Mediterranean.
