Weekly material / Bone Stream Special: the ultra-light you can take around the world

Fishing for small fish with lures, locally or on a trip, is fun but not always easy to do, depending on how you travel. With a footprint of just 48 centimetres, Bone's Stream Special makes it possible.

Stream Special

The Stream Special is Bone's lightest spinning rod. With an overall length of 177 centimetres, a weight of 93 grams and a power range from 1 to 8 grams, it is designed for very light fishing.
It also takes up very little space, measuring just 48 centimetres when disassembled into 4 sections. A soft storage bag is supplied with the rod to keep it in place when disassembled.

Only 48 centimetres long!
Given its length and power, it's clear that this is not a rod designed for record-breaking distances, but rather optimized for precision, to which it responds very well.
The manufacturer describes its action as fast, but I'd describe it as moderate fast, because it's still very flexible and doesn't just bend at the tip, but rather along half its length.

The Stream Special is also available in a casting version.
This flexibility allows you to propel lures with a single flick of the wrist, which is great when fishing small, crowded streams with vegetation all around you that prevents you from making big movements.
Aesthetically, we find the usual Bone look, with a black blank and dark camouflage handles. However, a few plastic parts with an imitation wood pattern add a little spice to the look.

The wood effect adds character to the cane.
As for the rest, it's classic, but always well made by the brand, whether it's the reel seat, the handle, the ring ligatures or the precision of the fittings.
Last but not least, even though the rod is small, Bone has greatly reduced the length of the handle, which makes this Stream Special a pleasure to use, as all too often, handles on small rods are too short.

For BFS enthusiasts, this rod is also available in a casting version.

Use

With its not-so-fast action, the rod is quite versatile, and can be used to fish with several types of lures, such as small swimming fish, floating insects or soft lures mounted on lead heads.
As far as target species are concerned, the rod is still small and at first sight, it is adequate for seeking out species between 500 grams and 2 kilograms. Occasionally, a slightly larger or more combative fish won't scare it too much, but personally, I wouldn't risk it repeatedly.

This makes it ideal for chub and trout in small streams, but also for all species up to 2 or 3 kilograms around the world, and that's what this rod is all about: lure fishing for small fish!

To accompany it

As for the ideal reel to balance this rod, a 1500 or preferably a 2000 model is ideal. A fine braid, from 6 to 10 lbs, will complete the package in a well-balanced way.

My opinion

The Steam Special's truly mini format makes it a rod you can really take anywhere. Fans of ultra-light fishing will be delighted, whether they're looking for street-fishing, or searching for small species around the world.
